August 27-29 ~ 24th Annual Oregon Shorebird Festival. Experience the wonder of shorebird migration along the scenic Oregon coast! The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Cape Arago Audubon Society, South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve and many other sponsors will have a full weekend of activities planned for birders of all skill levels. The festival is headquartered at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in Charleston. Activities include expertly guided land based field trips to Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, Millicoma Marsh and the greater Coos Bay area. Bandon Marsh and Coos Bay are renowned for shorebird watching, and each year a few rarities have delighted festival attendees. And for those who want to experience birding on the water, The Bird Guide, Inc. will offer a five hour pelagic trip on Saturday. Expected seabirds include Black-footed Albatross, Parasitic Jaeger, Fork-tailed Storm-Petrel, Sooty & Pink-footed Shearwater, Pomarine Jaeger, Red-necked Phalarope, Cassin's Auklets, and more. The Friday evening programs on will feature Ram Papish and the "The Great Oregon Bird Quiz." Saturday, Aug. 28, 10am ~ "Birds of Clearcuts near Carmel Knoll." Chuck Philo will lead this Yaquina Birders & Naturalists field trip. Please meet at the peat moss/fertilizer pallet by the Rite Aid Store near Newport's Safeway by 10 AM. There will be a 2 mile hike in and back from the parking area. Duration: at least 3 hours, so you may want to bring something to eat and drink. This event is free and open to the public. |

Saturday & Sunday, Sep 5 ~ "Audubon Presents." This one-day event will be held at the Lincoln City Cultural Center. Highlights include a 12:30pm showing of "On The Wing," the story of a remarkable flock of birds that became the heart of Portland, OR. Karen Hoyt, founder of Hunters in the Sky, presents “Hunters of the Sky,” an introduction to local birds of prey at 2pm. |

Saturday, Sep 11th, 9am-noon ~ Salmon River Estuary Important Bird Area (IBA), with Mary Coolidge, Assistant Conservation Director for the Portland Audubon Society. She will give a short talk about Oregon’s IBA’s and the work she is doing. We will then bird the Knights Park area led by expert birders from the Audubon Society of Lincoln City. At 11am we will kayak/canoe the Salmon River until noon. Our chapter has a limited supply of kayaks and one canoe which will be available on a first come basis. Those having kayaks/canoes should bring them. First-time birders welcomed and encouraged; other levels needed to help. Binoculars and field guides are provided for use during the trip. Free to all. Directions: From Lincoln City go north on Hwy 101 about 2 miles, just after crossing the Salmon River. Take the first road on the left which is Three Rocks Road. At the end of Three Rocks Rd take a left, which will end at Knights Park. Meet in the parking lot. |

Thursday, Sept. 16th ~ Athena Crichton and Tony Watson present "Africa, A Natural Adventure." They took a safari to Tanzania and Mt. Kilimanjaro and also visited Egypt. Athena is a naturalist with Marine Discovery Tours and also works for OSU Sea Grant as a marineeducator at the Hatfield Marine Science Center when needed. Tony climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. This Yaquina Birders & Naturalists meeting starts at 7 PM at Education Wing Room 30/32 in the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center. Please use the Staff Entrance (not the entrance to the Visitor's Center), follow the signs, and park near the Library. Cost: free. Everyone is welcome! |

March 12th ~ Paul Engelmeyer will be giving us a tour of the 216-acre Ten Mile Creek Audubon Sanctuary, home to the spotted owl and the marbled murrelet. Fish and Wildlife will also be part of this trip since they are studying salmon restoration on Ten Mile Creek. |
